Product page SEO: 8 elements I check on every audit
Product pages are where ecommerce SEO wins or loses. Here are the 8 things I check on every audit.
**1. Title tag formula**
Most winning product page title tags follow this pattern: [Product Name] | [Key Attribute] | [Brand]. Avoid jamming in every keyword — pick the most commercial one.
**2. Unique product descriptions**
Manufacturer descriptions are on 10,000 other sites. Duplicate content at scale is a real problem. Even a unique 100-word introduction above the manufacturer desc makes a difference.
**3. Review schema**
Product reviews with aggregateRating schema get star ratings in SERPs. This alone can increase CTR by 15–25%. If you have reviews and no schema, you are leaving clicks on the table.
**4. Breadcrumb schema**
Helps Google understand your site hierarchy and generates breadcrumb-style URLs in SERPs rather than the full URL string.
**5. Canonical handling for variants**
Size/colour variants should canonical to the main product page unless each variant has distinct search demand and unique content.
**6. Out-of-stock handling**
Do not 404 out-of-stock pages. Keep them indexed, add schema `availability: OutOfStock`, suggest alternatives. Pages with backlinks and authority should never be deleted.
**7. Image alt text**
Descriptive alt text (not keyword-stuffed, actually descriptive) improves image search visibility and accessibility. Often completely ignored on product images.
**8. Internal linking from category to product**
Every product should be reachable within 3 clicks from the homepage. Deep pages that are only accessible through pagination rarely rank well.
