Google Business Profile suspension — what causes it, how to recover, how to avoid it
GBP suspension is one of the most stressful things that can happen to a local business client. Here is everything I know about it from handling about 12 suspensions over the past three years.
**Types of suspension:**
*Soft suspension:* Profile still appears in search but the owner loses access to manage it. Usually triggered by a policy violation in the dashboard.
*Hard suspension:* Profile disappears entirely from Maps and search. The most serious type.
**Common causes:**
1. Keyword stuffing in the business name (e.g. 'Joe\'s Plumbing London Emergency 24h')
2. Using a virtual office or PO Box as the business address
3. Service-area businesses displaying a physical address they should not
4. Suspicious bulk edits or multiple logins from different locations
5. Competitor spam reports (increasingly common)
**Recovery process:**
1. Read the suspension notification carefully — it usually hints at the cause
2. Fix the issue *before* submitting a reinstatement request
3. Submit reinstatement via the GBP support form with as much proof of legitimacy as possible (utility bills, lease agreements, photos of signage)
4. Be patient — reinstatement can take 2–8 weeks
5. If rejected, request a human review via GBP support chat
**Prevention:**
- Keep your business name exactly as it appears on your legal documents
- Use a real physical address where you actually work or meet customers
- Enable 2FA on the Google account
- Never use a black-hat agency that does bulk GBP management
