How we got a local plumber from position 8 to position 2 in the local pack in 60 days

This client came to me with a Google Business Profile that had been ignored for two years. The business was legitimate, had good reviews from actual customers, but was barely visible in the local pack for their most important queries. **Audit findings:** - GBP categories: only 'Plumber' selected (missing secondary categories) - No GBP posts in 14 months - Business description did not mention the primary service areas - Photos: 3 stock images, zero real job photos - No Q&A section - Citations: inconsistent NAP across Yell, Yelp and Thomson Local **What we did (in order of impact):** 1. **Fixed NAP consistency** — Updated all citation sources to identical name, address, phone format. Used BrightLocal to find every listing. 2. **Added service categories** — Added 'Emergency Plumber', 'Bathroom Fitter', 'Boiler Installation Service' as secondary categories. 3. **Uploaded 25 real photos** — Before/after job photos, van with logo, team headshots. GBP rewards fresh, authentic imagery. 4. **Published weekly GBP posts** — Short updates: job completion photos, tips, seasonal advice. Signals activity. 5. **Added service area pages** — Built dedicated landing pages on the website for each borough served, each with genuine local content. **Result at 60 days:** - Pack position: 8 → 2 for primary query - GBP profile views: +240% - Direction requests: +180% Local SEO is not complicated. Most of the gains come from doing the basics properly.
